1965 Ford Falcon — 427 Stroker

The Cage Debate

This car came to us with a properly triangulated roll cage, the kind that keeps you safe at speed and gives a chassis the stiffness it needs to hook. But the door bars were fixed, welded in place, and the customer wanted to drive this car, not just stage it. So we re-profiled the down bars to permit entry. The cage itself didn't change, but now you can get in and out like a normal person. It's the kind of detail that doesn't show up in a photo, but it's the first thing you notice every time you open the door.

427 Inches of Small Block Fury

The centerpiece of this Falcon is the engine, and it deserves the attention. We built a 427ci small block Ford, and we didn't cut a single corner doing it. The foundation is a Dart cast-iron block, re-engineered from the factory casting with high-nickel alloy iron, priority main oiling, and billet steel four-bolt main caps. With a 4.125-inch bore and a 4.000-inch stroke, it lands at 427 cubic inches — the kind of number that used to require a big block.

Up top we installed Air Flow Research cylinder heads. AFR's 220cc Renegade castings are some of the best-flowing small block Ford heads available — big-block airflow through a small-block port. We backed them with a hydraulic roller camshaft spec'd to make power across a broad, usable curve. This wasn't a dyno queen, it was meant to pull hard on the street and still idle well enough to sit at a light without loading up. An electric water pump keeps coolant moving regardless of engine RPM. And because every part in this build needed to earn its keep, we sourced it all through our supplier network.

Transmission

Out back, we used a Tremec TKX five-speed. The Falcon came from the factory with a three-speed, and with three gears you have to pick: geared to get going quick, or geared to cruise easy on the highway. You can't really have both. The five-speed fixes that. First gear gets you moving, and fifth is tall enough that the engine sits relaxed at highway speed. The transmission is rated for more power than this engine puts out, so it's never going to be a problem. And the hydraulic clutch keeps the pedal light and smooth — no cables to stretch, nothing to adjust.

The Dashboard

Pop your head inside and the instrument panel looks like it belongs in a well-preserved 1965 Falcon. That's the trick. We installed a Dakota Digital factory-look cluster, modern electronics dressed in stock-appearing gauges. The speedometer, tach, oil pressure, water temp, and fuel level are all fully digital and programmable, with LED backlighting and configurable warning setpoints. You get the accuracy and features of a modern data acquisition system, but the dash doesn't scream "modified." It's subtle enough that someone who doesn't know Falcons would never guess it isn't original. We're firm believers that the best restomod work is the stuff you have to look twice to catch.

Too Much for the Street

Here's the part of the story that doesn't show up on a spec sheet: this car was too much for the street. The customer drove it, loved it, and then made a decision that says more about the build than any dyno chart ever could. A 427ci Dart-block small block Ford in a first-gen Falcon chassis, hooked to a TKX 5-speed and a properly stiffened unibody, is genuinely quick. When a customer tells you a car is more than they bargained for, you've done your job.
